Instagram Announces New Tools For Business

Taking the lead of its Mother Ship Facebook, Instagram announced some new tools designed to make Instagram a better place for business. Instagram is already being used by many businesses, both small and large, to effectively promote their products and services. After listening to customer feedback three key needs became clear to Instagram: Stand out, get insights and find new customers.

With this in mind Instagram is adding Business Profiles, Business Insights (Analytics) and a Promote Button, sometimes known as an Action or Buy Button. Using several actual businesses as examples Instagram described their new features this way:

With these new business tools on Instagram, the furniture store in San Francisco can receive emails from customers saving valuable time responding. The retailer in Austin can better understand its audience, tailor its content and refine its marketing strategy—even beyond digital. And the do-it-yourself craft shop in New York City can quickly fill a seat, move a product or get people into its store with ads on mobile.

Business Profiles will be free to all businesses and may include a contact button that enables a visitor to call, text or email the business. There will also be an included map and directions to the business location.

Screen Shot 2016-05-31 at 1.54.17 PM

Instagram Insights for business on Instagram will provide information about who their followers are and which posts do better than others from within the mobile app.

Screen Shot 2016-05-31 at 1.53.40 PM

The Promote Button lets a business pick a post they've already shared on Instagram and add a button encouraging potential customers to take action. Instagram enables a business to target the audience seeing the button and will suggest targeting as well. This is likely a for-fee advertising feature just like Facebook, but incredibly this aspect is not mentioned in their blog announcement.

Instagram Business profiles, insights and the ability to promote will be rolling out in the US, Australia and New Zealand in the coming months, and will be available in all regions globally by the end of the year.

YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft Agree To Censor EU "Hate Speech"

In a disturbing agreement from the perspective of free speech advocates Tuesday, the European Commission and U.S. based social media companies Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft agreed to a "Code of Conduct" on "hate speech". It's pretext is to stop terrorist related propaganda on social media, but reading the announcement from the EU it looks to also be a way to censor opposition to negative news about Muslims. The EU describes it this way:

The IT Companies support the European Commission and EU Member States in the effort to respond to the challenge of ensuring that online platforms do not offer opportunities for illegal online hate speech to spread virally. They share, together with other platforms and social media companies, a collective responsibility and pride in promoting and facilitating freedom of expression throughout the online world. However, the Commission and the IT Companies recognise that the spread of illegal hate speech online not only negatively affects the groups or individuals that it targets, it also negatively impacts those who speak out for freedom, tolerance and non-discrimination in our open societies and has a chilling effect on the democratic discourse on online platforms.

The EU further describes the purpose for the new rules as follows:

In order to prevent the spread of illegal hate speech, it is essential to ensure that relevant national laws transposing the Council Framework Decision on combating racism and xenophobia are fully enforced by Member States in the online as well as the in the offline environment. While the effective application of provisions criminalising hate speech is dependent on a robust system of enforcement of criminal law sanctions against the individual perpetrators of hate speech, this work must be complemented with actions geared at ensuring that illegal hate speech online is expeditiously reviewed by online intermediaries and social media platforms, upon receipt of a valid notification, in an appropriate time-frame. To be considered valid in this respect, a notification should not be insufficiently precise or inadequately substantiated.

The problem is what is hate speech? It's well known that the EU has often twisted the idea of hate speech from a battle with Islamic extremists and terrorists to a fight to stop the speech of those opposing their extreme positions. For instance, is it hate to draw a political cartoon of Mohammed as the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo did which resulted in the murder of 12 members of its staff by radical Islamic extremists. By Western standards of free speech, obviously not. But from the EU's point of view maybe.

Many see these new rules as Orwellian and distressing that US based social media companies would agree to censorship of views the EU doesn't agree with. From Breitbart:

Janice Atkinson MEP told Breitbart London: “It’s Orwellian. Anyone who has read 1984 sees it’s very re-enactment live.

“The Commission has been itching to shut down free speech in the Parliament and now they’re attacking social media. We have already seen Facebook ‘policing’ so-called right-wing postings.

“If an MEP, such as the centre-right Hungarians, the Danish People’s Party, the Finns, the Swedish Democrats, the Austrian FPO, say no to migration quotas because they cannot cope with the cultural and religious requirements of Muslims across the Middle East who are seeking refugee status, is that a hate crime? And what is their punishment? It’s a frightening path to totalitarianism.”

UKIP’s Justice and Home Affairs spokeswoman Diane James MEP told Breitbart London:

“This legislation is so vague that it is the thin end of the wedge not just curb hate speech but free speech as well.

“Different people and cultures across Europe have different ways of communicating. The Liberal tradition in Britain for instance is more open and very different from that of dictatorial former Communist countries in the East.

“The EU was sold to people as a Common Market, it became a political union and now wishes to decide and compromise our civil liberties as a people. This is unacceptable to a free people who have a right to know where all this legislation is leading to.

“In my opinion, if the EU still allows to me have an opinion, I believe this matter should be decided by national parliaments rather than the unelected European Commission.“

In response the these new restrictive rules on speech by the EU and American social media companies the European Digital Rights (EDRi) announced that is pulling out of future discussions with the Commission:

Faced with this lamentable outcome, and with no possibility to provide meaningful input to this process, the Commission has left us with no other choice but to withdraw from the discussion,

said Estelle Massé, EU Policy Analyst at Access Now.

It is ironic that the Commission is threatening to take Member States to court for failing to implement EU law on racism and xenophobia while it is persuading companies like Google and Facebook to sweep offences under the carpet,

added Joe McNamee, Executive Director at European Digital Rights.

In a release, the EDRi explains why they have a problem with this new Code of Conduct agreement:

What is in today’s code of conduct?

- an explicit statement that companies will “take the lead” in policing controversial speech online, which means that law enforcement authorities will not be taking the lead;

- an undertaking that IT companies will ban content that should already be legally banned;

- an undertaking to review notifications against company terms of service first and then, “if necessary” to review them against the law. In practice, this means that the legal procedures for testing the legality of content against the law will never be used as the code of conduct asks for illegal content to be banned by terms of service.

In short, the “code of conduct” downgrades the law to a second-class status, behind the “leading role” of private companies that are being asked to arbitrarily implement their terms of service. This process, established outside an accountable democratic framework, exploits unclear liability rules for companies. It also creates serious risks for freedom of expression as legal but controversial content may well be deleted as a result of this voluntary and unaccountable take down mechanism.

This means that this “agreement” between only a handful of companies and the European Commission is likely in breach of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, under which restrictions on fundamental rights should be provided for by law. It will, in practical terms, overturn case law of the European Court of Human Rights on the defense of legal speech.

3 Easy Tactics to Get Personal with Your Audience

3 Easy Tactics to Get Personal with Your Audience

Author: Renata Bell

Yesterday, I received an email from a retailer suggesting that I purchase a product I already bought last month. Don’t they know me by now?! It’s amazing how we’ve gone from the transactional nature of shopping on the web to demanding a personalized experience. Small wonder, a recent Edelman report reveals that 87% percent of buyers demand meaningful, contextual, relevant experiences.

Consider the department stores where the characters of Mad Men shopped. Their shopping experience was extremely personalized—they would go directly to a salesperson that knew them and their purchase history, and therefore could recommend other relevant products to them. But that experience doesn’t scale…or does it?

When you think about where we are in digital marketing today, there’s no excuse to not offer your buyers personalized recommendations and conversations. A complete marketing automation solution allows you to do this with trigger workflows that listen to activity across different channels and send personalized, automated responses based on actions that they take (or don’t take). And finding the right solution that allows you to do this is well worth it. In fact, 40% of consumers shop more at brands that personalize for them, according to MyBuys. But the right solution is just the start.

Here are 3 easy ways that you can get personal with your buyers:

1. Listen to What They Do, Not Just What They Say

To understand what your buyers want, go beyond just listening to what they say they prefer and “listen” to their behavior across your channels. Everyone is one in a million, so consider each and every buyer you interact with as an individual. When you figure that all 18-24 year old females should like X product and send them promotional emails based on that assumption, you’ll likely be marked as spam when your communications don’t resonate. Instead, take a look at each buyer’s unique journey with your brand.

Take for example their activity on your website or their interactions on your mobile app. What pages do they visit? What links do they click on? What push notifications do they tap on…or not tap on? What keyword searches brought them to the site or app? And sometimes more importantly, what are they NOT interacting with? Are there content types or product pages they never click on? Use this valuable information to inform and optimize your campaigns.

2. Go Beyond Names

Yes, putting a recipient’s name in an email increases open rates and engagement, but you can do so much more! Consider using tokens and dynamic content that will update for every single email. Say you’re an owner of a pet store. You can thank your customers for buying the last product they purchased, build rapport by referencing the animal type they have, and promote offers for their preferred pet food brand. But wait, there’s more. Why not change the image in the email to match their animal as well? You know those dog lovers can’t resist a cute puppy picture!

Pet Shop Example

Some options for personalization include:

  • Name
  • Last product purchased (text or picture)
  • Subscription end date
  • Product interest category (text or picture)
  • Industry (text or picture)
  • Location
  • Sales rep name
  • Preferred store location
  • Birthday

3. Nurture for Interests

You may have already set up a nurture campaign to welcome new customers, but it doesn’t need to be a generic one. People engage with content they care about and they will identify with your brand more when you offer them content that’s relevant. Consider setting up separate nurture streams by product interest (ex. cars, trucks, minivans) or purchase behavior (never purchased, purchased once, repeat customer).

Nurture Campaign
Think of different categories of customers that are easy to identify, such as status or product interest, but also not too niche (red convertible lovers in Utah) so that the content is easier to create. Consider measuring the effectiveness and engagement with each stream to understand how to improve them down the line.

In a world of information abundance, buyers are more empowered than ever before. And armed with this info, they are forming opinions and drawing conclusions well before they choose to interact with your brand. It’s now up to marketing, more than any other business function, to become the steward of the customer journey. So, get personal!

Where to Buy Custom Flags in Ontario Canada

Custom Flags from Inkdoodle

Where do people purchase their flags these days in Toronto Canada? Either online on deal sites such as ebay or amazon or Etsy. If you live in the Greater Toronto area of Canada you can purchae these custom flags a short drives away into a small suburb of Toronto named Markham. The drive from Toronto to Markham is only about 30 minutes so you can purchase and pick up your custom flags from Inkdoodle.ca. Prices are competitive and in Canadian currency. I’m sure you can find similar flags on ebay but we’ve ran into issues with custom flags of low quality and extra duties and taxes because it came from the USA. On top of that because of the USD currency its putting more strain on Canadians wallets.

Trade Show Roll up Banner Graphics – The Inside Scoop

Display graphics are graphic images used for illustration or “display” purposes. Display Graphics are usually printed on paper, vinyl or fabric using a “large format” printing device. Normally display graphics are over-sized graphics printed on paper or some other material, and then mounted or hung on a graphic display unit of some sort in a conspicuous place.

One-off display graphics are used in vinyl banners, trade show displays, or as backdrops for a convention, press conference, or special event such as an athletic event or tournament.

Multiple units of display graphic items are often required when a company has numerous sales outlets or franchises. In that case the producer of display graphics will produce a number of units such as posters, mounted displays, banner stands or vinyl banners so the company can mount a consistent promotional campaign.

** Indoor vs. Outdoor Applications

One of the most important distinction is between display graphics used for indoor displays, trade show roll up banners and display graphics used for outdoor display purposes.

Indoor products are usually set up in trade shows, retail stores, malls, and conferences. Outdoor items are things such as vinyl banners, signage, adhesive vinyl used for vehicles or window graphics, large outdoor posters (usually printed on vinyl or fabric), and streetscape banners.

Outdoor items are exposed to the elements and require special inks in order to be UV resistant and waterproof. The usual procedure is to use special solvent inks that do not fade nearly as quickly in bright sunlight, and are also water resistant. Some suppliers attempt to “cheat” by laminating items printed with water-based inks, but this is not a satisfactory solution.

It is often desirable to use solvent based printing for some indoor items. For instance, banners that you expect to use a number of times will have to be rolled and unrolled, and water-based inks are much more likely to break and scratch down with this kind of handling. Or if you want to hang a banner across the front of your display table at a trade show it is likely to be bumped and have coffee spilled on it. The more durable you make it, the better.

** Graphic and Art Considerations

Most experienced suppliers of display graphics will know exactly what kind of images and illustrations you should or should not use in your designs. Digital printing devices can print from illustrations and photographs, so you can include logos, maps, text or anything normally printable from a program like Quarkxpress, Illustrator, or Coreldraw.

Offset printing (magazines and brochures) requires a resolution of up to 300 ppi (pixels per inch), but display graphics can be printed with resolutions as low as 50 ppi (pixels per inch). Make them as large as possible and you should not have any problem blowing them up for a banner, popup display or roadside sign.

Find a display graphics supplier who can advise you in simple, straightforward terms. If you have a bit of experience dealing with layouts and images, you will find that creating display graphics is relatively easy. One important thing when designing your display item is to keep your design simple, and focus on one or two main elements. Many suppliers, such as Canada Display Graphics will even make minor adjustments to your files for no extra charge.

Custom Flags In Canada

It’s almost June and in about a months time it will be Canada day! A large yearly celebration birthday of Canada. For those of you who have ever been to downtown Ottawa during the 1st of July its an experience that you’ll never forget. Picture hundreds of thousands of people in the downtown area holding Canadian custom flags. There was a statistic in local newspaper that mentioned that about 68% of people were holding a Canadian flag on Canada day or a custom flag that resembled the red and white flag.  Finding these flags prior to Canada day can save you a lot of money especially if your new to the city and purchasing flags from a local shop. A custom Canadian flag could run you about $30-50 for a large 3’x5′ custom Canadian flag. If you plan ahead of time you can purchase these custom made flags from an online vendor Inkdoodle.ca or from amazon or ebay. The only issue with Amazon or Ebay is that most of the sellers are from the USA and I’ve been charged extra taxes or duties because it came from the US.

So get prepared and ready for Canada day!

Facebook Ad Network Takes On Google

Facebook ads will now target non-users of Facebook on outside websites and apps, directly challenging the supremacy of the Google Display Network. Previously, Facebook only showed ads on third party websites to users that were concurrently logged into Facebook.

Facebook is also taking on the hundreds of other ad networks such as Taboola, Adblade, Chitika that serve up ads on various websites. Facebook thinks it can be the gold standard in advertising ensuring a good experience for the website visitor by avoiding popups, slow loading ads and suspicious advertisers.

Andrew Bosworth, Facebook VP of Ads and Business Platform posted about this in a blog post, "One of the things we’ve heard from people is that many of the ads they see are annoying, distracting, or misleading. We think companies can do better, and that’s why we’ve been focused on improving ads both on and off Facebook."

Bosworth elaborated on how Facebook can stand out and win over publishers wanting to offer their visitors a better experience while still profiting from advertising on their sites:

We’ve all had this experience. You open a news article on your phone’s web browser and the page takes unusually long to load. Once it appears, the article is blocked by an ad. You might see a tiny “x” to hide the ad, but if you tap in the wrong spot, you get redirected to an app store or another website. It can be unclear who’s behind the ad or even if the website you’ve been directed to is safe to visit.

Advertising may be here to stay, but bad advertising like this doesn’t have to. That’s why we’re working to provide a better online advertising experience for everyone: people, publishers, and advertisers.

While more than a hundred companies already serve interest-based advertising on websites and apps today, we offer a better experience because we care about the integrity of Facebook ads.

Ads are reviewed against our standards and to ensure they are as respectful of people’s experience as possible. For example, we don’t permit ads that include sound unless you interact with them and we prohibit deceptive ads and ads for unsafe products and services. We’ve developed technology to determine when someone clicks on an ad on a mobile device by accident, so you don’t get taken to a website or app you didn’t mean to visit.

We also offer everyone controls over the ads they see, including tools to opt out of online interest-based advertising. If you have an account, you can do this directly from your Facebook settings, and we honor your choice wherever you use Facebook.

Facebook plans to offer advertisers the same types of targeting of non-Facebook users as it currently does to Facebook users by utilizing data from cookies that follow web surfers wherever they go on the Web. Bosworth told the Wall Street Journal, "“Our buttons and plugins send over basic information about users’ browsing sessions. For non-Facebook members, previously we didn’t use it. Now we’ll use it to better understand how to target those people."

Facebook will take in data about sites a user visits and associate that with a likely target. For instance, someone who visits photography tip sites could be viewed as interested in photography and photographic equipment and supplies. This is currently commonplace with Google and other ad Networks. That's why when you visit a site that sells sunglasses, you often then see various sunglass ads on other sites too.

Bosworth believes that because Facebook already has tons of data on a huge swath of the world's population they are better positioned to pull all of the behavioral data points together and serve highly targeted ads, even to non-users. Bosworth told WSJ, “Because we have a core audience of over a billion people [on Facebook] who we do understand, we have a greater opportunity than other companies using the same type of mechanism."

Roll Up Banner Stands & How to Effectively use them

Great advertising depends on getting details of your product or service in front of potential customers in any eye-catching way. Whether at exhibitions, festivals, road shows, press conferences, trade shows, fairs or in your own showroom, you need a way to present your goods to their best advantage. This is where roll up banner stands comes in. The roll up banner stand is a modern tool designed to maximize the ease and effectiveness of promoting your products.

Let’s look at what roll up banner stands are. A roll up banner stand is essentially a lightweight stand made of aluminium which serves as a frame for you advertising message. This message appears in the form of graphics printed in high resolution on graphic films which are laminated for durability.

Banner stands are available in a wide variety of styles including double and single sided banner styles, cassette rollers, telescopic, tension, rigid, motorized and spring. They can be retractable, roll up, or pull up. A variety of lighting options is also available.

Roll up banner stands are especially convenient as the graphic panel winds into a tensioned cartridge in the base. Cartridge banner stands feature a swappable cartridge allowing the advertising graphics to be changed in an instant.

Retractable roll up banner stands present long messages via a steadily rotating panel. These can communicate long texts effectively.

For outdoor exhibitions, special outdoor banner stands are available. For these you need to fill their bases with sand or water to ensure their stability.

One great thing about banner stands is their versatility. They can be positioned individually or tiled for extra impact. You can arrange a group of stands to best suit your needs if you need a large display. Banner stands can work alone or be used together with other promotional methods such as a trade show display. You could for example set one up in the lobby or meeting hall at an exhibition. Or you could put one up at the end of an aisle to attract visitors to your booth. And they’re convenient too. They simply retract into their base for secure and easy transportation. Assembly and dis assembly is a snap.

If you need to get your product before as many eyes as possible with efficiency, versatility and at a low cost, look into using roll up banner stands. Not only are they visually attractive but their portability and ease of setup makes your job so much easier. Their durability means that they can be used over and over again. And of course they’re a great way to generate interest in your product or service.

The banner stand is a modern tool designed to maximize the ease and effectiveness of promoting your products.

A banner stand is essentially a lightweight stand made of aluminium which serves as a frame for you advertising message. Banner stands are available in a wide variety of styles including double and single sided banner styles, cassette rollers, telescopic, tension, rigid, motorised and spring. Roll up banner stands are especially convenient as the graphic panel winds into a tension-ed cartridge in the base. If you need to get your product before as many eyes as possible with efficiency, versatility and at a low cost, look into using trade show roll up banner stands.

SEO for B2B: 3 Reasons Why You Can’t Avoid It Anymore

SEO for B2B- 3 Reasons Why You Can’t Avoid It Anymore

Author: Nate Dame

Most B2B marketers know that SEO is valuable, but hesitate to tackle it because of time and budget constraints, or just plain not knowing where to start. But can you afford to skip SEO? Most likely not, according to these stats:

  • 61% of B2B decision-makers start the decision making process with a web search. (Demand Gen Report)
  • 77% of B2B purchasers say they won’t even speak to a salesperson until they’ve done their own research. (Corporate Executive Board)
  • B2B brands that blog generate 67% more leads per month than those that don’t. (Social Media B2B)

SEO can make one of the biggest impacts on lead generation and can easily be one of the most cost-effective channels for new lead acquisition. So, it’s time to get off the fence and make SEO a priority in your company.

Here are three reasons why B2B marketers need to get serious about SEO:

1. Search Results for Many B2B Terms Aren’t Crowded Yet

While SEO competition in consumer marketing is at its height, the hesitation that B2B marketers face when it comes to SEO is the very reason that the brands that do use it have a strategic advantage.

More importantly, big B2Bs often don’t utilize SEO aggressively. DuPont, for example, shows up at the bottom of page 2 for the keyword search “silicone lubricant” (bottom of page 3 in my own experiment). While that may not necessarily hurt them, considering that companies with higher SEO rankings are almost definitely selling more products and making sales directly, utilizing SEO with content marketing can make their brand more visible.

How do you determine what your rankings are? Start by examining the playing field on Google with a depersonalized Google search for some key terms or phrases for your industry, or for questions that your sales team is frequently asked. You may have “Googled” your brand (or yourself, we all do it) before, but keep in mind that Google personalizes search results based on your search history, location, and more, which can skew the results. A depersonalized search strips those preferences and lets you see the results that your audience is more likely to see.

Once you’ve removed personalization preferences, look at where your brand shows up in the search results compared to your top competitors. Is anyone answering your prospects and customers’ common questions online? Are those answers authoritative, specific, detailed, and helpful?  If you can be among the first to answer their questions—and answer them well—you can capitalize on a huge opportunity and put a (potentially long-term) stake in the ground for SEO.

2. SEO Can Significantly Increase the Value of Every Content Effort

Done right, your content helps your buyers build trust and confidence in your business. For B2B specifically, your buyers want to know that the vendors they work with know their stuff, are reliable, and can be trusted.

If you are already creating content online, SEO can significantly increase the value of every content asset you have already created, as well as every new content asset. Without combining content creation with SEO, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd.

Some of your initial considerations should include:

  • Keywords: The search terms on each level of decision-making will be different. On the initial level, searchers may make very broad requests, such as “shipping companies in the Northeast,” while other users may search for more detailed keywords to meet certain specifications.
  • User intent: Google’s algorithms are good enough now that keywords are almost worthless without considering the user’s intent. Do they want to buy or learn? Create content that answers the question behind the keyword.
  • Content type: Understand who your audience is and then create the right type of content for them. For example, practitioners are more likely to be grabbed by a video, infographic, or ebook—something that explains the basic concepts while, CEOs and managers may be more willing to exchange email addresses for whitepapers.

Remember that all of the above will vary for every decision maker. What attracts the attention of a department manager trying to impress his boss will likely not be the deep resource that the CMO is looking for as she plans for the following year.

3. The Value (and Opportunity) of Mobile for B2B

Mobile can and does covert, although at times indirectly—and mobile traffic is spiking. Buyers are starting to use mobile in the workplace more frequently than they use laptops or desktop computers, according to eMarketer. That includes people on purchasing teams.

The demographic of your buyers is getting younger, and they use mobile at an increasing rate, even at the office. Your B2B marketing strategy should take that into consideration, not only because it’s the way of the foreseeable future, but because it’s an opportunity to be among the first to reach that demographic where they’re most comfortable.

How does mobile optimization differ from search on a computer?

  • Long-tail keywords are even more important on mobile. Mobile users are more likely to search by voice, using a complete sentence that’s conversationally structured. Work direct answers to potential questions into your content whenever possible.
  • Faster load times and, of course, a mobile-friendly user experience are required.
  • CTAs need to be easily accessible by users and their thumbs. That means buttons need to be big enough, phone numbers should be tappable, and forms should be as short as possible.

Another reason mobile is so important is that it’s in use at all times of the day or night, not just during business hours. Without mobile optimization, you can miss out on potential purchasers who are researching during off-hours—especially when you consider that mobile users are likely to click through on several high-ranked results, as reported by a Mediative study.

Now is the time to use the lack of B2B SEO saturation to your advantage, to make the most out of your content marketing strategies, and optimize for mobile users. If you neglect mobile SEO, your competitors who do utilize it will earn the brand impressions. That’s a lot to lose out on.
